How we can work together

My primary background is in science fiction and fantasy, although I’ve edited thrillers and SF-related nonfiction as well. I’ve worked on all the subgenres—epic, literary, humor, adventure, urban fantasy and much more—for both YA and adult audiences. Whether you are a writer or an agent, if you have a manuscript you believe would benefit from my assistance please send me a description of your material and the kind of help you’re looking for.

A New York professional brings her 30-year publishing background to private clients who want to take their writing to the next level.

If the project seems like a possible fit, I’ll ask you to send in the first 50 pages, which I’ll look over at no charge to determine whether the project is right for me. This first look also allows me to estimate a cost for the job. After assessing the sample pages I will suggest one of the following approaches:

• Structural editing: An in-depth analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the material, focusing on major issues such as pacing, characterization, story structure, and narrative focus.

• Line editing: Includes copyediting to correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation, as well as a strengthening of the work on a line-by-line basis.

I will also provide advice on the publishing process when your project is ready to move to the next step.

Betsy was a good, tough editor from day one, and she made every one of my books better as a consequence of her thorough and thoughtful editing.
